This site is going to be dedicated to my journey through the Social Work field. Currently, I am a student at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. I just started the Bachelors in Social Work classes and only have those to go! I want to share my experiences, the things I learn, the stories I read and my thoughts on them, as well as learn other peoples thoughts as well.

Recently, I have taken an appreciation towards those who are in need or struggling financially. It’s one of the biggest reasons why I’ve come to the Social Work field, seeing families in poverty and what comes out of that. The things we don’t normally think about for those who are struggling, such as alcohol abuse, drug usage, child abuse and neglect, spousal abuse, and mental and physical illnesses.

Once I started in my BSW classes, I started learning about a lot of programs that are offered, how they are funded, and the policies behind them, for example TANF, which stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It’s a program that has helped families find work, help them support their families, and provide cash assistance for every day needs.

I’m currently taking 4 classes, Generalist Practice, which has a huge focus on the macro and micro levels of social work and how they work together. Professional Development, a class where we are learning about the code of ethics, learning about how to be professional in the field. This is a great class and as a requirement we are going to be volunteering. Human Behavior and the Social Environment I, there are two parts to this class and this semester is the first one. This class really has a focus on things that revolve around the biopsychosocial-spiritual summaries. Finally, my last class this semester is the Social Welfare Policy and Services class, this is an online class and has been really enjoyable. I didn’t think I’d have fun learning about policies, but the professor makes it easy to stay focused on the material.

I’ll be using this site as a place to post my journey through these classes, the social work field, a journal of my day to day, and hopefully a ton of information that will be beneficial to other social work students!

This is a safe space, a place where I want people’s opinions to be valued and not criticized. I will update this post as I grow this site.

Please continue to come back, I’ll be adding content weekly, if not daily.
